Entre perplejidades: El asno de Buridán en la ética y la ciencia contemporánea

    En la obra de Javier Muguerza aparecen cuestiones metodológicas críticas para la reflexión moral, que ayudan a comprender su matizada defensa del individualismo ético vinculada al intento de superar dicotomías del tipo individuo/sociedad, naturaleza/cultura o individualismo/holismo. Se exploran algunas coincidencias entre los trabajos de Muguerza y Amartya Sen sobre la justicia, en particular la forma que ambos tienen de asumir el individualismo ético. Se destaca una preocupación metodológica común, importante en la reflexión ética de Amartya Sen (la conexión entre incompletitud y argumentación ética contra la injusticia), y también significativa en el enfoque de Muguerza (la razonabilidad y la base argumentativa del disenso frente a situaciones de injusticia). Se trata de una doble cuestión: ¿cómo actuar desde la perplejidad y qué relevancia tiene el propio acto de elección? Son dos aspectos de la acción humana, la estimación de alternativas y la argumentación ética sobre nuestras opciones como parte ambas del propio acto de elección.

    Estos elementos no siempre se han tenido en cuenta adecuadamente ni en la economía ni en la ética contemporánea. Ambos autores van “más allá del contrato social” abriendo espacio a las características individuales incorporando la indispensable sociabilidad del individuo. Muguerza, al utilizar la autonomía como elemento focal sobre el que plantear la igualdad, se acerca al enfoque defendido por Amartya Sen en su libro La idea de la justicia. El against injustice que ha formulado Sen, me parece que tiene claras conexiones con el imperativo del disenso que ha propuesto Muguerza.

    Javier Muguerza's work raises critical methodological questions for moral reflection that help to understand his nuanced defense of ethical individualism linked to the attempt to overcome dichotomies such as individual/society, nature/culture or individualism/holism. Some coincidences between Muguerza's and Amartya Sen's work on justice are explored, in particular the way they both assume ethical individualism. A common methodological concern is highlighted, important in Amartya Sen's ethical reflection (the connection between incompleteness and ethical argumentation against injustice), and significant in Muguerza's approach (reasonableness and the argumentative basis of dissent in the face of situations of injustice). It is a double question: how to act from perplexity and what is the relevance of the act of choice itself? These are two aspects of human action, the estimation of alternatives and the ethical argumentation about our options, both as part of the act of choice itself. These elements have not always been adequately considered in either economics or contemporary ethics. Both authors go "beyond the social contract" by opening space for individual characteristics by incorporating the indispensable sociability of the individual. Muguerza, by using autonomy as the focal element on which equality is based, is close to the approach advocated by Amartya Sen in his book The Idea of Justice. The against injustice formulated by Sen seems to me to have clear connections with the imperative of dissent proposed by Muguerza
