Throughout the Late Middle Ages, the Portuguese studium generale, housed at Lisbon and Coimbra during different periods, was a hotspot of ongoing unrest with both the authorities and the citizens of the municipalities that hosted the studium, due to its large amount of privileges. In fact, it often rose a situation of latent conflict between these two groups whose differences were quite noticeable, including their social role, status and even their garments – a phenomenon traditionally called «town and gown».

Ao longo da Baixa Idade Média, o estudo geral português, sediado ora em Lisboa, ora em Coimbra, constituiu, pelos amplos privilégios que deteve nas mais variadas matérias, um foco de instabilidade permanente, quer com as autoridades dos municípios onde se instalava, quer com os cidadãos dessas mesmas cidades, gerando-se amiúde uma situação de conflitualidade latente entre dois grupos humanos facilmente distinguíveis pelas suas atribuições, estatuto social e até pela indumentária – um fenómeno tradicionalmente designado como «town and gown»
