La población gitana en Benalúa, como en otras poblaciones, se diferencia de la mayoría paya en su realidad cultural, social y económica, aunque no podemos considerar que sea un colectivo homogéneo. En un centro educativo donde el alumnado gitano supera el 40% se hace necesario un estudio global sobre esta etnia.
La palabra “gitano” sugiere muchos significados alojados en el imaginario colectivo de forma inconsciente e irreflexiva. Con esta iniciativa se ha pretendido un acercamiento directo y contrastado no solo a su historia, sino a su intrahistoria, a su realidad afectiva y cotidiana.
Al término de nuestra investigación, hemos llegado a la conclusión de que, a pesar de que el pueblo gitano forma parte de nuestra historia, la bibliografía dedicada a este colectivo es escasa, excepto en el ámbito de la música.
En lo que respecta al alumnado gitano, se viene detectando la necesidad de una atención específica, por lo que el profesorado está obligado a mantener una actitud crítica haciendo patentes los prejuicios que son la base de la discriminación, valorando y respetando la diferencia y llevando a cabo, en consecuencia un replanteamiento de los objetivos y las metodologías implantadas.

The Roma population in Benalúa, just like in other villages of the area, differs from non-Roma citizens in their economic and sociocultural reality, although we cannot consider them a homogeneous group. In a high school where Roma pupils are over the 40 percent of the total number, it was necessary to carry out a comprehensive study about this ethnic group.
The word "gypsy" suggests many preconceived meanings that have existed in our social mind for a long time and which have been created in an unconscious and unthinking way. With this initiative, we have tried to approach the Roma community in a direct and contrasted way, taking into consideration not only their history but also their intrinsic history, their affective and everyday reality.
After much research, we have arrived to the conclusion that although Roma people are part of our history, the bibliography dedicated to this ethnic group is very scarce –except for their music.
Concerning our Roma students, teachers noticed from the beginning the necessity they had of specific attention. That is the reason why teachers force themselves to adopt a critical attitude, pointing prejudices out –which are the base for discrimination-, appreciating and respecting the differences and consequently redefining their aims and used methodologies.
