  El tránsito entre el Antiguo Régimen y el liberalismo fue una época de profundo cambios sociales, culturales y políticos que incluyeron transformaciones sustanciales en los modelos de género, proceso del que el arte fue al mismo tiempo testigo e impulsor. Este artículo estudia los retratos femeninos en la dilatada obra de Vicente López Portaña (1772-1850). Como artista al servicio de la monarquía absoluta y constitucional, la aristocracia y la burguesía, su vida y su mirada estuvieron atravesadas por esas tensiones. Se analiza aquí su pintura no como simple reflejo de esa evolución, sino como elemento dinámico en el juego de representaciones.

  The transition from the Ancien Régime to liberalism was a period of profund social, cultural and political changes, including substantial transformations in models of gender. Art was at the same time a witness and an agent of that process. This essay studies female portraits in the long-lived artistic production of Vicente López Portaña (1772- 1850) An artist at the service of absolute and -later- constitutional Spanish monarchy and of an aristocratic and bourgeois clientele, his life and his work were at the centre of those tensions. His paintings are here analysed not as a mere reflection of that evolution, but as dynamic elements in the play of representations.
