    El proyecto “GEO_FPI: Observatorio Transfronterizo para la Valorización Geo-económica de la Faja Pirítica Ibérica” se enmarca en el Programa Operativo de Cooperación Transfronteriza España-Portugal (POCTEP) 2014-2020, aprobado por la Comisión Europea. El Instituto Geológico y Minero de España (IGME) lidera este proyecto, en el que también participan la Dirección General de Industria, Energía y Minas de la Consejería de Empleo, Empresa y Comercio de la Junta de Andalucía (JA), por parte española, y el Laboratorio Nacional de Energía y Geología (LNEG) y la Cámara Municipal de Aljustrel (CMA), por parte portuguesa.La Faja Pirítica Ibérica (FPI) es una de las provincias metalogenéticas más importantes del mundo. Se trata de una descomunal concentración de sulfuros masivos que se extiende por parte del suroeste de la península Ibérica, en una franja de aproximadamente 250 km de largo y 40 km de ancho, y que han sido explotados durante milenios, especialmente en los últimos tres siglos (XIX, XX y XXI).El proyecto tiene como objetivos principales realizar una cartografía temática armonizada a ambos lados de la frontera entre España y Portugal dedicada a la geología y a la potencialidad minera, así como promocionar las litotecas de ambos países, a fin de favorecer la investigación en la FPI. Asimismo, otro objetivo secundario contemplaría la mejora de la sostenibilidad, la gestión y la comunicación de proyectos relacionados con el Patrimonio Geológico y Minero (PGM).La inclusión del PGM dentro del proyecto GEO_FPI conlleva considerarlo como un recurso susceptible de valorización geo-económica, desde el punto de vista patrimonial, así como de indicio de potencialidad minera. De esta manera, el PGM puede ser fuente de conocimiento geo-minero y de recursos económicos para el territorio de la FPI. De ahí el interés por darlo a conocer y ponerlo en valor.

    The project “GEO_FPI: Cross Border Observatory for the Iberian Pyrite Belt Geo-economic Valorization” is part of the Operational Program of Cross-Border Cooperation Spain-Portugal (POCTEP) 2014-2020, approved by the European Commission. The Geological and Mining Survey of Spain (IGME) leads this project, which also involves the General Directorate of Energy and Mining Industry of the Ministry of Employment, Enterprise and Commerce of the Andalusian Gobernment (JA), on the Spanish side, and the National Laboratory for Energy and Geology (LNEG) and the Aljustrel Municipal Council (CMA), on the Portuguese side.The Iberian Pyrite Belt (FPI) is one of the most important metallogenetic provinces in the world. It is a huge concentration of massive sulfides that extends throughout the southwest of the Iberian peninsula, in a strip of approximately 250 km long and 40 km wide, and that have been mined for millennia, especially in the last three centuries (XIX, XX and XXI).The main objectives of the project are to carry out a harmonized thematic cartography on both sides of the border between Spain and Portugal dedicated to geology and mining potential, as well as to promote the core samples libraries of both countries, in order to favor research in the FPI. Likewise, another secondary objective would contemplate the improvement of the sustainability, management and communication of projects related to the Geological and Mining Heritage (PGM).The inclusion of PGM within the GEO_FPI project entails considering it as a resource susceptible of geo-economic valuation, from the patrimonial point of view, as well as an indication of mining potential. In this way, the PGM can be a source of geo-mining knowledge and of economic resources for the territory of the FPI. Hence the interest in making it known and to enhance it.
