Resumen de Health KOSs in a data-driven age

Marcia Lei Zeng

  • Standardized health KOSs [including taxonomies, classifications, thesauri, codelists, and ontologies, known as “knowledge organization systems (KOS)”] have playedcritical roles in communication and information exchange in the data-drivenenvironment as they have been used by all healthcare systems all over the world.During pandemics like COVID-19, it is more challenging to deal with informationoverload and semantic conflict as it directly impacts the whole domain of healthcare. After introducing the challenges, this essay will highlight the efforts of majorhealth KOSs, especially the International Statistical Classification of Diseases andRelated Health Problems (usually referred as International Classification of Diseases[ICD]), revealing their essential roles in health information exchange andcommunication during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is clear that the standardized health KOSs, which are the foundations of successful semantic interoperability, allowthe world to compare and share data in a consistent and standard way betweeninstitutions, across regions and countries, and over periods of time. This essay isbased on my related papers recently published and in-progress (Zeng, 2017,2018; Zeng et al., 2020; Hong & Zeng [2022]).
