This contribution deals with the role of the interfaces in the modelling of diachronic change. I discuss this issue exemplarily by referring to three approaches to syntactic change that have particularly highlighted the role of the interfaces: i) Longobardi ’ s (2001) Inertial Theory, ii) Roberts/Roussou ’ s (2003) theory of grammaticalization, and iii) studies of the diachronic interaction between word order and information structure. Although the three examples di ff er from each other with respect to the exact role they attribute to the interfaces in syntactic change, they agree that syntactic change cannot be considered in isolation.
