Why the term "professional language" can confuse the reader?

    El artículo advierte a los lectores interesados contra una adopción acrítica del término lenguaje profesional en el contexto de la comunicación especializada. Con demasiada frecuencia, dicho término se utiliza en la extensa literatura sin preocuparnos por su precisión terminológica. La falta de concienciación sobre el significado del término lenguaje profesional conduce a consecuencias negativas en la argumentación lingüística, tales como el descuido del estado actual de la investigación en lingüística general, la contaminación del término científico por su comprensión ingenua en la comunicación cotidiana entre los profanos, o la identificación entre el lenguaje y su uso, algo que constituye una deficiencia metodológica grave. El lector de la literatura especializada podría, por tanto, sin los conocimientos lingüísticos suficientes, tomar erróneamente los contenidos presentados en la lectura como evidentes y correspondientes al estado actual de la cuestión. En la primera parte del artículo se señalan las mencionadas fuentes de los peligros interpretativos en la lectura, tomando como ejemplo la historia de la investigación. Posteriormente, se ofrecen al lector unos puntos de referencia constantes para una mayor interpretación, que permiten reconocer una variedad estilístico-funcional del lenguaje étnico en el concepto de lenguaje profesional, incluyendo fenómenos que van más allá de la reducción del lenguaje profesional a la mera terminología. Del mismo modo, se señalan las formas de adquisición y existencia de los llamados lenguajes profesionales, así como los rasgos distributivos que los distinguen de otras variedades funcional-estilísticas del lenguaje étnico. En conclusión, se destacó su peculiaridad, derivada de la necesidad de una denominación precisa de los fenómenos y procesos en el campo de la actividad humana, que se concluye con la especificidad del campo de estudio, esto es, del hecho de que las personas en dicho campo se comuniquen a nivel experto, y la necesidad relacionada de tal selección de medios lingüísticos de la lengua étnica en la que tiene lugar la comunicación para que sus usuarios se comuniquen eficazmente en el campo de la comunicación profesional. El conocimiento de estas condiciones permitirá al lector abordar con mayor comprensión la relación entre el lenguaje y el llamado lenguaje profesional.

    The article warns readers interested in the specialised communication against an uncritical adoption of the term professional language, which is often used in the extensive literature on the subject without care for terminological precision. The lack of awareness of the meaning of the term professional language leads to negative consequences in linguistic argumentation, such as the neglect of the current state of research in general linguistics, the contamination of the scientific term by its naive understanding in everyday communication between laypersons, or the identification of language and its use, which is a serious methodological deficiency. The reader of the specialised literature might therefore, without sufficient linguistic knowledge, mistakenly take the contents presented in the reading as self-evident and corresponding to the current state of knowledge. In the first part of the article, the aforementioned sources of interpretative dangers in reading are pointed out, using the history of research as an example. Subsequently, the reader is offered some constant points of reference fur further interpretation, which allow to recognise a stylistic-functional variety of ethnic language in the concept of professional language, including phenomena that go beyond the reduction of professional language to mere terminology. The author also pointed out the forms of acquisition and existence of the so-called professional languages, as well as the distributional features that distinguish them from other functional-stylistic varieties of the ethnic language. In conclusion, their peculiarity was highlighted, arising from the need for precise naming of phenomena and processes in the field of human activity, which is concluded by the specificity of the field; from the fact that people in the said field communicate at the expert level, and the related need for such a selection of linguistic means from the ethnic language in which communication takes place that its users communicate efficiently in the field of professional communication. The knowledge of these conditions will enable the reader to approach the relationship between language and the so-called professional language with greater understanding.
