Victor López Seoane (1832-1900) como ornitólogo europeo en el centenario de su fallecimiento: la relación de Víctor López Seoane con Alfredo y Reinaldo Brehm y su importancia para la ornitología ibérica

    Con motivo del centenario del fallecimiento del naturalista gallego Víctor López Seoane (1832-1900), se estudia aquí su faceta como ornitólogo. Su formación ornitológica de la mano de los hermanos Alfredo y Reinaldo Brehm le situó en una especial mirada de la especie como posible entidad variable individual y geográficamente, lo que contribuyó a que fuera el primer ornitólogo español en utilizar la nomenclatura trinomial. Su labor ornitológica llevó a López Seoane a describir eres nuevas subespecies ibéricas (Gecinus viridis galliciencis, Caccabis rufa hispanica, y Perdix cinerea charrela) publicando primeramente sus resultados en tres folletos, dos con fecha de 1870 y el otro en 1891. En nuestro estudio, sin embargo, aportamos pruebas acerca de un probable fraude científico en la datación de los opúsculos, los cuales creemos se publicaron en 1894. Sólo Caccabis rufa hispanica (Lopez Seoane, 1894) es una subespecie aceptada en la actualidad atribuible a su descubridor.

    To commemorace the centennial of the death of Galician naruralist, Víctor López-Seoane (1832-1900), we present a study of his work asan ornithologist. His ornithological instructíon under the tutelage of the brothers Alfred and Reinhold Brehm set him with in a select circle that conceptualized species as individually and geographically changing entities, all of which contributed to him becoming the first Spanish ornithologist to use the trinomial nomenclature. His work as an ornithologisc took López-Seoane to the discovery of three new Iberian subspecies, Gecinus viridis galliciemis, Caccabis rufa hispanica, and Perdíx cinerea cham/a. He first published these findings in three leaflets, two of which bear dates from 1870 and the third from 1891. In our study, however, we present evidence of scientific misconduct regarding the dating of the booklets, which we believe were truly published in 1894. Currently, of the three díscoveries, Caccabis rufa hispanica (López-Soane, 1894) is today the only enrity considered a true subspecies finding attributable to López-Seoane
