    El balance que hace el autor revela la complejidad de la lucha político-militar insurgente iniciada después de la contrarrevolución militar de 1954. Estudia la estrategia de las organizaciones revolucionarios y su confrontación con las políticas del Estado militar guatemalteco. Destaca el papel que esas luchas jugaron en la transformación de las dictadura militares, hasta llegar al punto de la negociación política entre el movimiento guerrillero y el nuevo Estado civil. Tras valorar los logros políticos de la negociación, el autor concluye en la imposibilidad actual de la revolución.

    The author's analysis reveals the complexity of the insurgent political military struggle that begun in Guatemala after the counter-revolutionary military regime of 1954. This study examines the strategy of the revolutionary organizations and their confrontation with the policies of the military state. Figueroa Ibarra underlines the role these struggles have played in the transformation of the military dictatorships, and in the political negotiations between the guerrilla movements and the new civil state. Besides highlighting the political successes of the negotiations, the author concludes that a revolution is unfeasible.
