Resumen de Plant–microbe interaction within phytosystems used for air treatment

  • The importance of plants in indoor spaces has increased in the recent decades not only for their esthetic value but for their benefits in indoor air quality improvement. The major contribution of the air purification effect provided by botanical systems is most generally attributed to microorganisms associated with the plants. In this chapter, the synergistic plant–microbe interactions for air phytoremediation, particularly of volatile organic compound removal are presented. The different functions and contributions of phyllospheric, rhizospheric, and endophytic microorganisms on botanical air purification are discussed. The manifold unknown aspects of the microbiome of indoor plants will be explored. Considerations related to harmful microorganisms associated with indoor plants also are addressed. Further, opportunities for enhancing air phytoremediation by stimulating the indoor plant–microbe interaction from simple and practical steps to advanced genetic manipulations.
