    • To overcome the limitation of diffusion associated with the phytoremediation by potted plants, active botanical biofilters have been developed. This technology has progressed to now incorporate more than just horticultural and biotechnological tools for improving indoor air quality, and may offer a new means to reduce the concentration of indoor air pollution. However, the technological aspects related to the removal of air pollutants by phytosystems still need to be explored, including the airflow rate and flow direction, moisture and irrigation regimes, the botanical component, and growth medium selection. The comprehensive air cleaning abilities and the potential for functional reductions in the concentrations of several air pollutants, suggest that active phytosystems may become implemented at a greater rate than that at which knowledge is accumulated. To fully realize the value of botanical air biofiltration technology, considerable technical development is still required.
