This article approaches the representations of the “wretched” based on the play Dois perdidos numa noite suja (Two lost in a dirty night) by Plinio Marcos. I seek to call attention to the subject of human solitude and humiliation and the vicious circle of mutual torture and exacerbation of sexuality present both in the play and the movie versions. In the midst of the endless misery and violence and the absolute lack of meaning in those degraded lives, the super exploitation of human labor and premature death emerge as a permanent horizon of society’s pariah people. Page and screen lead to various possible interpretations. Thereby, the play text is rewritten in the movie and the words become images.
