  Siempre está presente la duda sobre si a los cuatro y cinco años es temprano para que los niños aprendan a leer. La psicopedagogía recomienda no hacerlo y, más bien, cultivar otras capacidades que los prepare para la vida escolar, en donde tiene un lugar preferente el aprendizaje de la lectura y escritura. Padres y docentes siempre se preguntan: ¿es bueno que los niños aprendan a leer tan pronto? Por otro lado, están las viejas prácticas naturalizadas durantes muchos años (y presentes aún hoy) que apuraban el inicio de procesos de aprendizaje de la lectura, escritura y matemáticas. Nos referimos a las actividades que llevan a los niños a repetir el alfabeto, las vocales, a escribirlas sin que tengan ninguna conciencia de qué es lo que están recitando y su utilidad real. Los reiterados bajos resultados en la capacidad lectora de porcentajes importantes de niños en 7ºde EGB indican que este no es el camino adecuado.
