This study aims to characterize the sponge spicules saltwater and freshwater present in the paleolacustres and paleolagunares sediment samples collected in the Juréia Itatins Ecological Station, São Paulo. The testimony sediment studied showed maximum age standard dated 8370 ± 50 yr BP by the method of 14C dating (radiocarbon). The continental species of sponges were detected Trocospongilla variabilis and Heterorotula fistula, and the marine spicules are found throughout the core, are identified as representatives of Demospongiae as Tedania sp., Acarnus sp., Haposclérida, Thrombidae, Sceptrella sp. Family Latruncullidae. This research shows that loose spicules in Holocene marine sediments are not good indicators for paleoenviromental reconstruction, but are excellent support for other indicators.
