Resumen de Der dem Niceta von Remesiana zugeschriebene Traktat "De diversis appellationibus" (CPL 646): Neuedition, Studie und Übersetzung

Lukas J. Dorfbauer

  • Based on the identification of three hitherto unknown manuscripts, the present article offers a new critical edition of the short treatise De diversis appellationibus (CPL 646), traditionally ascribed to Niceta of Remesiana († after 414), as well as a German translation, a textual commentary and a full discussion of the text’s transmission, its authorship, date and later reception. It is demonstrated that the modern ascription to Niceta of Remesiana must not be taken for granted, although the text most probably originated in the early fifth century. Its author was acquainted with Latin anti-Arian literature of the fourth century, and he may have used the De fide, usually ascribed to Gregory of Elvira, and also Rufinus’ translation of one sermon originally by Gregory Nazianzen. The De diversis appellationibus was a very rare text in the middle ages but it was used, directly or indirectly, by the unknown (probably Irish) author of a commentary on the First Epistle of John (CPL 1123a). This latter work may have been compiled in Northern Italy, since all the manuscripts of the De diversis appellationibus known to us were written in that area.
