     El territorio por el que se distribuye la escritura del Suroeste puede dividirse en tres zonas principales que presentan características distintas en lo que se refiere a la densidad y calidad de los contextos arqueológicos. El sur de Portugal, la zona con mayor número de epígrafes, muestra un limitado número de contextos bien documentados para la gran cantidad de estelas conocidas desde el siglo xviii; Andalucía Occidental se caracteriza por la extrema escasez de testimonios, en contraste con otras evidencias, como la importancia de la epigrafía fenicia o la pujanza de las sociedades del Hierro Antiguo en la zona; Extremadura exhibe una gran variedad de situaciones en un panorama investigador que, gracias a recientes hallazgos, ha adquirido cierto dinamismo. El estudio de estos tres ámbitos permite realizar una propuesta general para la cronología de la escritura del Suroeste, así como plantear algunas ideas en torno a sus usos sociales y culturales.

    The territory involved by the evidence of Southwest scripts is divided into three main areas that show different characteristics regarding the density and quality of their archaeological contexts. The South of Portugal, the region which has provided the highest number of epigraphs, shows a limited number of well-documented contexts for the large amount of stone stelae found from the 18th century; Western Andalusia is characterized by the extreme scarcity of testimonies, in contrast to other evidence, such as the importance of Phoenician epigraphy or the strength of the Early Iron Age societies in this area; the region of Extremadura shows a variety of situations in a background that, thanks to recent researches, has become something more dynamic. The study of these three areas allows us to make a general proposal for the chronology of the Southwest Script, as well as to raise some notes regarding its social and cultural uses.
