    • This chapter surveys some of the most striking and interesting problems and questions related to case in Romance. It covers survival of binary Romance case distinctions in early Gallo- and Rato-Romance, and in modern Daco-Romance; residual case distinctions in tonic and clitic pronominal systems; nominative residues with animates and refunctionalization of nominative/accusative alternants. Specific topics dealt with include: nominal and pronominal inflection; inflection of nouns (and adjectives); Latin case forms inherited in Romance; extended accusative; case systems in Romance; case-forms without case-marking; case inflection of pronouns (and determiners); substitutes for case inflection; determiners and case; use of prepositions and other dedicated case-markers; analytic genitives and datives; prepositional accusatives; cliticization and clitic doubling.
