    El objeto de estas reflexiones es buscar un acercamiento al horizonte sociocultural de fines del siglo XIX y comienzos del siglo XX a través del discurso de Jacinto Benavente. El dramaturgo vive la crisis finisecular, participa de las inquietudes del 98 y da cabida en su obra a una serie de cuestiones que son tema de preocupación para los intelectuales, tales como darwinísmo social, casticismo y europización, oligarquía, caciquismo, estrechez de la vida provinciana, difícil acceso a la ciudadanía, encarnación social del cristianismo, regeneración, familia... El presente artículo hace referencia a ello, si bien se centra muy especialmente en un tema relativo a la vida privada: el matrimonio.

    The aim of these reflections is to look for an approach to the end of XIXth century and begining ot XXth sociocultural horizon through the speech by Jacinto Benavente. The play-wright lives the fin-de-siècle crisis, he participes into the 98 worries and leaves space, in his work, for a number of questions that are of a big concernt for the intellectuals, such as socia darwinism, «casticisimo» and Europeanization, oligarchy, despotism, tightness of provintial life, hard access to citizenship, social embodiment of cristianisty, regeneration, family... Although te present study makes reference to all this, it is particularly centred on a topico related to private life: marriage.
