  • After a brief outline of the principal episodes in the external history, the chapter surveys the principal aspects of phonology, morphology and syntax of Italian, the dialects of Tuscany, and the dialects of Corsica. Topics dealt with include: tonic vowels; atonic vowels; consonants and weakening; syllable structure and phonotactics; stress; raddoppiamento fonosintattico; morphology of nominal group (nouns and adjectives; determiners and quantifiers; pronouns) and of verbal group (verb roots, inflection), syntax of nominal group (determiners, pronouns, adjectives), verbal group (tenses, aspect, mood, voice), and of clause (sentence organization; agreement).
