  • After a brief outline of the principal episodes in the external history, the chapter surveys the principal aspects of phonology, morphology and syntax of the dialects of central Italy. Topics dealt with include: area mediana stricto sensu and the area perimediana; tonic and unstressed vowel systems; consonants; morphology of nominal group (articles, demonstratives, possessives, number, gender) and verbal groups (inflectional classes, number and person marking, tense, aspect, mood); syntax of nominal group (determiners, adjectives, possessives) and of verbal group (tense, aspect and mood usage; auxiliary selection and past participle agreement).
