    Rafael Bover is a seventeenth century Majorcan writer that is considered to be a prominent literary islander author. However, his work hasn’t been studied in depth and we think that there are reasons for questioning, at least in part, some of the statements about this poet. We have analyzed a manuscript, which is the main document containing poems written by Bover, that belonged to the count of Aiamans, nowadays to be found at the library of Montserrat; we have also studied the affirmations that Josep Maria Quadrado and Joaquim Maria Bover made about this author, which have shown us the difficulty to confirm the idea developed about this writer, which seems to be mostly based on the interpretations of the mentioned scholars; this can be seen in the information written about our poet since the second half of the nineteenth century until the present day. In this article we want to show that the content of the Montserrat manuscript doesn’t confirm the statements that have been done later on about Rafael Bover, but it raises doubts: about the way how the document was read, and also about the possible existence of other manuscripts that we haven’t seen yet: Joaquim Maria Bover talks about more documents with poems written by Rafael Bover whose location is nowadays unknown. Our analysis is based on the Aiamans manuscript, the one that seems to have been used by the first ones who studied Bover, that is, J. M. Quadrado and J. M. Bover.

    Rafael Bover és un autor mallorquí siscentista considerat referent literari del segle xvii illenc. Tot i així, la seva obra no ha estat estudiada en profunditat, i creiem que hi ha motius per qüestionar, com a mínim, part de les afirmacions que s’han fet sobre aquest poeta. Hem analitzat un manuscrit, antigament en poder del comte d’Aiamans i actualment ubicat a la biblioteca de Montserrat, que és el principal document on podem trobar poesies de Bover; també hem dut a terme un estudi del que sobre aquest autor digueren Josep Maria Quadrado i Joaquim Maria Bover, el qual ens ha mostrat la dificultat de corroborar el concepte que hom té d’aquest escriptor, que sembla basar-se, en gran part, en les interpretacions que en feren els erudits esmentats; efectivament, la informació que trobem sobre el nostre poeta des de la segona meitat del segle xix fins a l’actualitat mostra la influència d’aquests estudiosos. En aquest article volem mostrar que el contingut del manuscrit de Montserrat no corrobora les afirmacions que s’han fet posteriorment sobre Rafael Bover, sinó que planteja dubtes: sobre la manera com fou interpretat el document, però també sobre la possibilitat que hi hagi altres manuscrits que no hem vist: Joaquim Maria Bover mateix parlà de més documents amb poesies de Bover l’ubicació dels quals és desconeguda. La nostra anàlisi es basa en el manuscrit Aiamans, que és el que sembla que feren servir els primers estudiosos de Bover, és a dir, J. M. Quadrado i J. M. Bover.
