This paper has the objective to point out the diminutive types that exist in Valencian and to find out its working. Based on an own corpus (CoValC) that contains colloquial Catalan conversations of speakers from Valencia, we checked, on the one hand, which forms of diminutive show up and, on the other hand, what its main function is: semantic or pragmatic. Just as we expected, the form -et and its flexion has been the most common throughout the corpus. Furthermore, semantic function (incorporation of smallness idea at lexeme) gets barely a 3.8 % of all cases situated in CoValC. However, pragmatic function occupies more than 90 % of the cases of this corpus, half of which is utilized for the mitigator value (strategy to avoid or reduction any attack to interlocutor) and, the other half for the emotional value (strategy for realise an approach towards interlocutor through a diminutive that turns one word cute or harmless), in spite of also picking up other types of functions, such as affection turned into irony.
