Resumen de Konstruktionen von Männlichkeit in der römischen Literatur: ein Überblick über die altertumswissenschaftliche Forschung

Petra Schierl

  • Taking its cue from current media debates on masculinity as well as publications that portray studies of masculinities as a field of research anchored in different disciplines this article provides a survey of research on men and masculinity in Greek and Roman Antiquity. While masculinity has for the past three decades been both a research topic and a category of historical and literary analysis, survey chapters as well as sections reviewing past research on masculinity in monographs are more recent phenomena. They indicate a growing awareness of studies of masculinities as a subfield of Gender Studies in Antiquity. Against the background of the current state of research, this article discusses research perspectives as well as challenges from the viewpoint of Latin Philology. It serves as an introduction to a series of articles that focus on men and masculinity in Latin literature and originate in papers presented at the digital conference „Konstruktionen von Männlichkeit in der römischen Literatur“ (Sept. 16–17, 2020, Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg).
