Resumen de Pintura de história em debate: a crítica de arte no Salão de Paris de 1861

What were the fashionable issues in the Paris art world at the time of the 1861 Sa-lon? What paintings, painters, or artistic trends did this exhibition bring to light? In the search of answers to these questions, I read art criticism texts published in the Parisian press, went through photo albums showing the arrangement of works in the Palais des Champs-Elysées and analysed cartoons about the Salon. These materials unveil an artistic field in the process of transformation. One particular change eli-cited numerous contemporary comments: the weakening of historical painting, about which critics expressed divergent opinions and for which artists proposed original solutions. The study of the reception two paintings -Charlotte Corday, by Paul Baudry, and Phryne before the Areopa-gus, by Gérôme- helps us achieve in-depth understanding of this issue and the art of this period.

Quais eram as questões em voga no mundo das artes em Paris por ocasião do Salão de 1861? Que quadros, pinto-res ou tendências artísticas estavam em evidência na exposição? Em busca de respostas a estas perguntas, realizou-se a leitura das críticas divulgadas na im-prensa parisiense, a consulta a álbuns fotográficos que registraram a dispo-sição das obras no Palais des champs-Elysées e a análise de caricaturas sobre o salão. o material levantado revela um campo artístico em transformação. Uma mudança em especial recebeu numerosos comentários dos contempo-râneos: o enfraquecimento da pintura de história. Sobre tal tema, os críticos expressaram opiniões divergentes, e os artistas propuseram soluções originais. o estudo da recepção de dois quadros, Charlotte Corday, de Paul Baudry, e Fri-neia diante do tribunal, de gérôme, nos auxilia a aprofundar o conhecimento sobre essa questão e sobre a arte desse período.
