  This text presents a few of the works of art featured in the 1931 Exposition Coloniale Internationale et des Pays d’Outre-mer (International and Overseas Countries Colonial Exhibition) in Paris in order to discuss how the colonial world was then made seen in France; it also discusses other exhibitions held in the 20th century with similar themes. This period is the heyday of the so-called colonial exhibitions, which showed indigenous peoples no longer as sa-vages, but as being able to belong in modern times and the civilized world. Thus, I will look slowly and attentively at works of art included in the 1931 Colonial Exhibition that the old Palais des Colonies, in Paris, is still showing today.

  Este texto apresenta algumas das obras de arte expostas na Exposition Coloniale Internationale et des Pays d’Outre-mer (Exposição Colonial Internacional e dos Países d’Além-mar) de 1931 ocorrida em Paris, na intenção de discutir a maneira pela qual o mundo colonial foi dado a ver na frança naquela década e, também, pretende focalizar outras ex-posições realizadas no século XX, cujos temas se assemelham. Nesse período se tem o apogeu das exposições ditas coloniais, responsáveis pela exibição dos indígenas não mais como selva-gens, mas como capazes de adentrar a modernidade e pertencer ao mundo civilizado. assim, proponho examinar com vagar e atenção obras de arte que figuraram na Exposição Colonial de 1931 e ainda hoje se mantêm expostas no antigo Palais des colonies, em Paris.
