Este artículo repasa la historia de la investigación y algunos de los avances más recientes en el estudio de la arqueología mesolítica y neolítica de la zona de las gargantas del Danubio, en el centro-norte de los Balcanes. Su objetivo es contextualizar los cantos decorados más abundantes en el yacimiento de Lepenski Vir en este contexto regional.
La aparición de obras de arte esculpidas sobre cantos, algunas de las cuales representan criaturas híbridas entre humanos y peces puede relacionarse con las prácticas de subsistencia y mortuorias de estos recolectores del Holoceno. La comprensión del contexto de su elaboración a finales del séptimo milenio cal BC, en la época de la transición entre el Mesolítico y el Neolítico también requiere una visión de lo que ocurrió en el transcurso del Mesolítico de esta región.
Esta expresión creativa específica del simbolismo aparece en una coyuntura histórica particular en la que los cazadores-pescadores-recolectores indígenas entraron en contacto con los primeros grupos neolíticos de ascendencia noroeste-anatólica y su tradición cultural.

This article reviews the history of research and some of the most recent advances in the styudy of the Mesolithic and Neolothic archaeology of the area of the Danube Gorges in the north-central Balkans in order to contextualize the boulder artworks most abundantly found at the site of Lepenski Vir in this regional context. The appearance of sculpted boulder artworks, some of which depict hybrid human/fish creatures, can be linked to both subsistence and mortuary practices of these Holocene foragers. Understanding the context of their making at the end of the seventh millennium cal BC at the time of the Mesolithic-Neolithic transition also requires one to take a deeper view of what took place in the course of the Mesolithic of this region. This specific creative expression of symbolism appears at a particular historical juncture when indigenous hunter-fisher-gatherers came into contact with the first Neolithic groups of north-western-Anatolian ancestry and their cultural tradition.
