  • Resumen
    • The factory of Aristráin Villaverde is a reference for the metallurgical industry of Madrid. Its constitution in 1953, together with other large companies, represented the beginning of the race for the industrialization ofboth the municipality and the country. This development, after the firstyears of Franco’s autarky, had a direct impact on the economic, social andurban structure of southern Madrid. In this way, its relevance for the current neighborhood of Villaverde is notonly industrial but also historical and anthropological. And it is importantto point that the district managed more than 15% of industrial employment in the entire southern region (Fernández Gómez 2004). This circumstance is essential to understand both the development during Franco’sregimen and the “memory of work” linked to industrial heritage. Thus, currently and beyond the real estate speculation, the factory is on theverge of being completely demolished. While Aristráin represents a node ofspecial power for the transformation and connection between the southernmunicipalities itself (Bellod Redondo 2007).This article values the heritage of the Aristráin factory since its buildingsand location require actions that do not ignore their origin or their industrial memory. So, its transformation facilitates the establishment of newuses adapted to the current and future needs of the South edge of Madrid. In this way, the factory can be understood not only as the backbone of theeconomy but also as part of the social and urban composition of Villaverdeand the municipalities of the south.
