Els marginats socials com a “culpables” de “lo mal contagiós” en la València del segle XVII

    In this article we analyse how the plague epidemics, and specifi cally those of 1647-1652, were moments of deaths, contagions, restrictions, and controls, but also of an enormous religious eff ervescence due to the fear of the population to invoke the wrath of God again, and the desire of the population to correct their sins so that Providence would free them from the disease. In this context, civil and ecclesiastical power was used to carry out, on the one hand, a policy of greater control and social stigmatization of certain groups such as prostitutes or vagrants, and on the other hand, to correct certain behaviors or practices that were considered harmful, such as playing games of chance, playing the role of procuress, blaspheming, or behaving or dressing in a manner that was not “decorous” in places of worship

    En aquest article analitzem com les epidèmies de pesta, i concretament la de 1647-1652, foren moments de morts, contagis, restriccions i controls, però també d’una enorme efervescència religiosa per la por de la població a tornar invocar la ira de Déu i el desig d’aquesta de corregir els pecats per a que la providència els lliurés de la malaltia. Aquest context fou aprofi tat pels poders civils i eclesiàstics per a portar a terme, per una banda, una política de major control y estigmatització social de determinats col·lectius com les prostitutes o els rodamons, i per altra, corregir determinats comportaments o pràctiques que consideraven perjudicials com jugar a jocs d’atzar, fer d’alcavot, blasfemar o comportar-se o vestir de manera poc “decorosa” dins dels llocs de culte.
