This study deals with the audiovisual representation of Colonel Gamal Abd al-Nasir (Nasser), late president of Egypt, in Arab and Egyptian cinema both during his lifetime and following his death. It begins with an attempt to offer various definitions of charisma, evaluating Nasser’s leadership in terms of these definitions. It then goes on to examine the place of the highly allegorical and iconographic portrayals of the leader in the mass media within a past and present political context. Thus, the study raises the crucial question as to whether recent cinematic biographies of Nasser are indeed an attempt to posthumously abstract revive his charisma, and if so, why.
