    El 1871 Charles Darwin publica L’origen de l’home i la selecció en relació amb el sexe, la seua primera gran aportació a l’explicació natural de l’origen de la humanitat, un tema deliberadament omès en la seua obra més coneguda, L’origen de les espècies. Convençut que havia arribat el moment adient de tractar en públic tan espinosa qüestió, Darwin genera un llibre que, en la forma i en el fons, és profundament victorià. Hi reflecteix els seus prejudicis de classe, de gènere i de nació (imperial), alhora que basteix els fonaments de la nostra visió contemporània de l’evolució humana sense cap intervenció sobrenatural. El monogràfic commemoratiu de la revista Treballs de la Societat Catalana de Biologia ens ofereix un ampli i divers panorama del coneixement actual sobre els orígens de la humanitat.Paraules clau: era victoriana, selecció sexual, races humanes, imatge científica, filogènia humana.

    In 1871 Charles Darwin published The origin of man and selection in relation to sex, his first major contribution to the natural explanation of the origin of mankind, a subject deliberately omitted in his best-known work The origin of species. Convinced that the right time had come to deal with such a thorny issue in public, Darwin spawned a book that, in form and substance, is deeply Victorian. It reflects his class, gender and national (imperial) prejudices, while at the same time lays the foundations of our contemporary view of human evolution without any supernatural intervention. The commemorative monograph of the journal Treballs de la Societat Catalana de Biologia offers us a wide and diverse panorama of current knowledge about the origins of humanity.Keywords: Victorian era, sexual selection, human races, scientific image, human phylogeny.
