El mito clásico de Medea ha sido objeto de múltiples tratamientos en los que generalmente se le representa como una bruja astuta y vengativa, portadora y causante de males. No obstante, la escritora Christa Wolf reactiva en su novela Medea. Stimmen elementos del mito que han caído en el olvido. Wolf reestructura el mito y muestra cómo las instituciones de poder legitiman sus abusos por medio de él y buscan culpables para librarse de la responsabilidad de los problemas que aquejan a una sociedad. De ahí que nazca la necesidad de expulsar chivos expiatorios que se pueden identificar con la antigua figura griega del fármacos.

The classical myth of Medea has been given different treatments in which Medea is usually represented as a crafty and vindictive witch who carries and causes misfortune. Nevertheless, author Christa Wolf reactivates some forgotten elements of the myth in her novel Medea. Stimmen. Wolf restructures the myth and shows how power institutions authorize abuse. These institutions are looking forscapegoats in order to avoid their own responsibility for social problems.
