    Este trabajo indaga sobre la colonización visual del sur de Chile durante el proceso de expansión del Estado nacional hacia la provincia de Llanquihue en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Particularmente, se presta atención a la configuración del paisaje, el registro del viaje y la representación de poblaciones en la obra del viajero Francisco Vidal Gormaz, explorador, militar, narrador, dibujante y cartógrafo quien, junto a su equipo, participó de este proceso de conquista interna del territorio. Contribuyó con ello a modificar la mirada sobre esta región, inicialmente observada como una Naturaleza salvaje e ignota, ligada estéticamente a la noción de “lo sublime”, para transformarla en un paisaje que comenzaba a ser comprendido como bello.

    This paper explores the visual colonization of southern Chile during the process of expansion of the nation towards the province of Llanquihue in the second half of the 19th century. We particularly focus on how landscape is configured in the work of the traveler Francisco Vidal Gormaz, an important explorer, soldier, writer, illustrator and cartographer who, along with his team, participated in this process of occupation of domestic territory. Vidal Gormaz’s expedition contributed to changing the perception of the Llanquihue region, initially considered wild and unknown, aesthetically linked to the notion of “the sublime”, and later transformed into a landscape that was beginning to be understood as beautiful.
