    Durant la Guerra Civil i fins més de dos lustres després dʼacabada aquesta, milers de republicans són reclosos en multitud dʼestabliments penitenciaris. Dʼentre aquests, una mica més de dos-cents pertanyen a Santa Pola. Principalment procedeixen del camp de batalla, bé com a presoners, bé com a presentados, qualificació que fa referència a aquells individus que decidiren desertar de les files de lʼExèrcit Popular de la República i presentar-se davant les autoritats militars revoltades. Dʼaltres hi són per fer costat al Govern Constitucional de la República –dirigents i simpatitzants dels partits polítics, sindicats i organitzacions afectes al Front Popular, o bé vencedors de les eleccions de febrer de 1936–, també els qui han transgredit la Llei de Taxes o han pertangut a una Lògia Maçònica i, finalment, aquells soldats integrants de lʼExèrcit Popular pertanyents als reemplaçaments de 1936 a 1941 i que són qualificats com desafectos per les Juntes de Classificació Locals.

    For more than one decade after the end of the Civil War, thousands of republicans were imprisoned in a multitude of penitentiary establishments. Of these, just over two hundred were held in Santa Pola. They mainly came from the battlefield, either as prisoners or as "presented" - this qualification refers to those individuals who decided to desert the ranks of the Popular Army of the Republic and present themselves to the military authorities of the insurgents to support the Constitutional Government of the Republic leaders, and sympathisers of the political parties, trade unions, and organisations involved in the Civil War, those who have transgressed the Law of Taxes, those who have belonged to a Masonic Lodge or those soldiers who were members of the Popular Army, belonging to the replacements from 1936 to 1941, who are qualified as "disaffected" by the Local Classification Boards.
