Hunting activities are very important in the Balearic Islands for economical and socialreasons. There are many private and public hunting areas that need to grow different crops in order tosupport the feeding needs of the hunting species. This is why the objective of this study was to comparethe performances of seven different crops in a public hunting area in the south east of Mallorca, in orderto study their capabilities as food suppliers for the main hunting species in the area, the common woodpigeon and the wild rabbit. The main parameters analyzed were seedling emergence, crop phenology, biomass and grain production in the crops, and feeding habits and food consumption of wild rabbits andwood pigeons. The main results concerning the crops showed how barley and triticale were the bestcereals for biomass production, and vetch and wheal as legumes for seed production. With respect tothe hunting species, there was a large difference in habits between the two species: the rabbit preferredthe cereals, vetch and perennial grasses, while the wood pigeon concentrated its feeding activitiesmainly on wheal and triticale.
