Resumen de Femicide and gender based violence in Spain

Paloma Pontón Merino, Inma Pastor Gosálbez, Ana Acosta, Angel Belzunegui Eraso

  • Although the concept of femicide is not commonly used in Europe, it is nevertheless widespread in many Latin American countries, which have classified femicide as a crime in their penal codes. We believe that this concept also exists in Spain and in Europe. In this paper, we deeply analyze one aspect of femicide, which is the violent death of women in the home. In the first two sections, we analyze the public policies implemented by the Spanish government to combat domestic and gender‐based violence. We then consider the figures for formal reports and victims of domestic and gender‐based violence in Spain. Finally, we assess the situation in Spain as regards the fight against domestic and gender‐based violence, and propose some recommendations for its discussion.
