Resumen de Reading Current Children´s Electronic Literary Production in Brazil

Edgar Roberto Kirchof

  • This paper consists of a brief overview of the electronic literary production for children available in Brazil, on the one hand, and the preliminary results of a research on electronic literary reading conducted in a Brazilian school with 8-10 year old children, on the other hand. The first part of the paper presents two main groups of digital literary works: children’s storytelling and digital poems. Whereas most digital narratives are created or adapted for tablet and other mobile devices, digital poetry intentionally directed towards children is still very limited, although it is possible to find some experiments carried out by Brazilian poets. Others are characterized as adaptations of poems for children which had originally been printed. The second part of this article presents the preliminary results of an ethnographic research on reading digital works by students in Brazilian elementary schools. The main goal of this research is to understand how students of primary and secondary education levels negotiate with the new possibilities of uses and practices allowed by writing and reading on the computer, creating their own ways of interpreting digital literary texts. From this research it was possible to conclude, among others, that literary reading on the computer is not necessarily perceived as more pleasurable than reading in print by young readers. Moreover, the children tend to prefer digital works that are game-like rather than works that resemble printed literature.
