According to the literary sources, the temple of Iuppiter Stator was close to the Forum and at the foot of the Palatine; however, all that area was excavated in the late nineteenth century, and no temple could be identified. An escape from this impasse was proposed by T.P. Wiseman (2017), who argued that the temple must have stood on the ground that was removed to make space for the post-Neronian Atrium Vestae. That explanation has now been rejected by Adam Ziółkowski (2020), who insists on the traditional identification of the temple site as the podium of the Torre Cartularia, just south-west of the Arch of Titus. This article demonstrates that the traditional identification is incompatible with the sources, and that Wiseman’s suggestion remains the only possible solution to the problem.
