The history of conservation and restoration has been a forgotten topic in general historiography, and in particular in the field of archaeological materials, including ceramics.
In Museums with a long tradition, such as the Museo Arqueológico Nacional of Spain, it is highly rare to find a piece that has not been restored several times during its 150 years of history. We have been able to confirm this through the study of sixty-nine black-figure Attic vases which form the selected sample for this research. As these treatments have not been documented until recently, it has been necessary to reconstruct the process from the technical study of the vessels, from the scarce data found in the bibliography and the Archive, and from the collection and interpretation of the available images.
