Hernán Cortés knew that the taking of the great lake city of Tenochtitlan would only be possible by isolating the city by land and by sea. It seemed obvious that the encirclement could only be substantiated if they managed to isolate the Mexica, who for centuries had supplied themselves with thousands of canoes. In this presentation we analyze the formidable naval squad created expressly for the siege, and made up of thirteen whips and some two thousand Texcocan canoes. The navy mobilized a third of the Spanish, monopolizing most of the artillery pieces.
