  E. coli es un bacilo Gram negativo que se considera parte de la flora normal del intestino humano, pero existen cepas patógenas. Es el microorganismo más frecuentemente implicado en bacteriemias nosocomiales y comunitarias dando lugar a infecciones de diversa índole (infecciones urinarias, de la sangre, gastrointestinales, etc.). Existen seis grupos descritos de E. coli causante de diarrea. Su diagnóstico puede realizarse mediante el cultivo y pruebas serológicas. El tratamiento a una infección de este patógeno debe realizarse mediante antibióticos, pero cada vez aparecen cepas más resistentes a éstos.

  E. coli is a Gram negative rod that is considered part of the normal flora of the human intestine, but there are pathogenic strains. It is the microorganism most frequently involved in nosocomial and community bacteremia, giving rise to infections of various kinds (urinary, blood, gastrointestinal infections, etc.). There are six described groups of E. coli that cause diarrhea. Its diagnosis can be made by culture and serological tests. The treatment of an infection of this pathogen must be carried out with antibiotics, but more and more resistant strains to these appear.
