    Este avance de investigacin presenta una revisin crtica de las principales teoras sobre etcnicidad y movilizacin tnica, y de las explicaciones ms influyentes sobre la ola de movilizaciones indgenas que inici en la mayora de los pases latinoamericanos en los setente. La revisin cubre teoras con supuestos epistemolgicos diversos (estructura, cultura y racionalidad instrumental) y con marcos metodolgicos distintos (mtodos cuantitativos, formal y de estudios de caso). Cada teora se analiza a partir de su lgica causal, evidencia y poder explicativo. Surgen tres conclusiones. Primera: los casos latinoamoericanos han estadoa usentes de la teorizaicin sonre movilizaciones tnicas en la ciencia poltica y la sociologa. Por ello, las teora sobre etnicidad estn estadsticamente sesgadas. Segunda: la mayora de las interpretaciones sobre movilizaciones indgenas en Amrica Latina han ignorado los principales desarrollos en la poltica comparada. Por ello, muchos de estos trabajos son metodolgicamente dbiles. Finalmente, numerosas hiptesis seobre movilizaciones indgenas surgidas recientemente deben ser sujetas a comprobacin emprica.

    This research note presents a critical review of the main theoretical explanations of ethnic identity formation and mobilization and of the most influential accounts of the wave of indigenous mobilizations that took off in most Latin American countries in the mid 1970s. The review covers theories and approaches that use different epistemological assumptions (structure, culture and sintrumental rationality) and methodological approaches (quantitative, formal and case studies). Each theory is assessed  according to its causal logic, evidence and explanatory power. Threee conclusions follow. First: the Latin American cases have been grossly ignored in ethnic theorizing in comparative politics and sociology. A a result, most ethnic theorizing is statistically biased. Second: most interpretations of indigenous mobilizations in Latin America have stayed away from the main theoretical and methodological debates in comparative politics. Therefore, most of them are methodologically weak. Finally, all hypotheses on indigenous mobilization that have emergerd in past decades need to be put to systematic testing.
