Salomon’s Wisdom: Semantic Productivity of a Biblical Anthroponym in Spanish and Russian Phraseological Worldview

The article, in a contrasting way, examines the semantics of the biblical anthroponym Solomon, functioning in phraseological field and being an integral part of the anthroponymiconof both Russian and Spanish. Methodologically, in order to reveal the semantics of the biblical culture of Solomon, this name, which functions in both Spanish and Russian speech as an antonomasia, was investigated on the materials of fiction and press, on explanatory, encyclopedic and phraseological dictionaries of Spanish and Russian languages. Its main semantic characteristics are wisdom, wealth, justice. Due to its aphoristic content, the biblical name Solomon and its derivatives are widely used in the characterizing, identifying and appraisal functions in Spanish and Russian languages, often with a “reverse” sense. The full semantic-connotative and stylistic identity of sayings with the component Solomon in two languages is not observed, although traditionally they are considered equivalents. There are significant differences in the range of meanings of seemingly identical idioms.
