“Steps” of Characters in Prose of Leo Tolstoy and His Contemporaries: Comparative Statistical Analysis of Author’s Lexical Compatibility

The article is devoted to a formal analysis of idiostylistic lexical compatibility in classical Russian prose. The aim of the research is to study idiostylistic syntagmatic characteristics in L. N. Tolstoy’s novels compared and contrasted against his contemporary authors. A comparison of contexts for frequently used words has been conducted regarding the extensive corpus of works by L. N. Tolstoy, F. M. Dostoyevsky, I. S. Turgenev, I. A. Goncharov, and A. P. Chekhov (4 million tokens). The noun “шаг” [step] is one of these words, which has the greatest number of original contextual partners in Leo Tolstoy’s novels as opposed to other writers. The unit of analysis is a bigram — a pair of words used in a single phrase. The analysis shows distinctive idiostylistic features of Tolstoy’s lexical syntagmatics as compared to the texts by his contemporaries. Another distinctive feature is a large number of original attributes of ‘walking’ in his novels which defines quantitative and qualitative importance for literary characterization of a person. The study presents statistically proved piece of idiostylistic lexical syntagmatics.
