n 1885, some neighbours from the now so called “Plaça del Gra” (Grain Square) sent a proposal to the Town Council for the building of a roof above the square to cover it. Their aim was to move the grain and cereal market place, which was until then held in the Current “Plaça de les Patates” (Potato Square) to that new location. In order to help with the project, they offered 6,000 pesetas.

On these pages, I am making an account of all the process and the commotion that the entire project caused; from the removal of all the street markets held in the city, the complaints from the neighbours around the Potato Square, who were losing their right to hold the grain street market in their neighbourhood, and the legal action the Council took against the instigators of the project when they refused to pay the already promised payment. According to them, they did not pay because the Town Council had not accepted the conditions in the contract and had made changes on it, on their own and without asking for permission.
