Reverse-phase column bioleaching was evaluated to recover iron and cobalt present in an abandoned urban mine tailing. Two polyethylene micro columns were used in the bioleaching process, using native Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and Chemolithotrophic bacteria isolated from the waters of the same wetland, to compare their performance against bacteria obtained in the laboratory. 20.7% Fe was recovered, using bacteria from the laboratory. With the autochthonous bacteria, 0.06% of Fe was extracted. The Cobalt extraction was 21 ppm with laboratory bacteria and it was not extracted with native bacteria from the wetland. It is feasible to extract Iron from the tailing with bioleaching, using specialist bacteria, with native bacteria from the wetland the recovery was low. This technology does not allow the recovery of cobalt under the conditions of the study.
