Cuando Alfonso I se apoderó de Calatayud en 1120, la ciudad tenía una larga historia, arraigada en la época omeya. El corpus documental disponible, textual y arqueológico, permite evidenciar las dinámicas urbanas de Calatayud: el impulso urbanizador fue dado por Muhammad I, cuando hizo nacer de manera oficial la ciudad; proponemos relacionar el desarrollo de Calatayud con el proceso de urbanización que atañe a al-Andalus en época del califa `Abd al-Rahman III.

When Alfonso I took control of Calatayud in 1120, the city had a long history rooted in the Umayyad era. The available literature, both textual and archaeological, illustrates the urban dynamics of Calatayud: the impulse to urbanise was given by Muhammad I, when he officially created the city; this essay proposes a relation between the process of urbanisation in Calatayud and that which affected al-Andalus in the era of Caliph `Abd al-Rahman III.
