Resumen de A simulation on trade liberalization and entry prices in the EU

José María García Álvarez-Coque, Víctor David Martínez Gómez

  • The measures of border protection applied by the European Union (EU) on imports of fruits and vegetables (FV) are complex and usually not well represented in trade models, not only because of the range of instruments still constraining trade but also because of the special nature of the main traded products (product differentiation and seasonality). This paper assesses the impact of reducing the entry prices (EP) applied to a group of FV to a level that they become irrelevant. The proposed model is of a partial equilibrium nature, and takes into account the impacts on a seasonal basis. The import model is applied to tomatoes, cucumbers, clementines and table grapes. Trade impacts of eliminating EP are significant for specific sales to the EU from different origins and seasons, mostly for Moroccan tomato exports. Concerning the products originated in the EU, their sales and prices experience moderate reductions.
