This article analyses the relationships between Madrid and its bordering municipalities dur-ing the period in which the first city experienced its most significant transformations from a social, economic, and demographic point of view. Prior to the annexation of the adjacent villages after the Spanish Civil War, a wide range of debates were held on the links that should be established between those areas and the Spanish capital. The study of these reflections shows how they resulted from a bilateral process, explained by the growing needs of municipalities increasingly dependent on Madrid as well as by the emergence of the concept of urban agglomeration.
