    The objective of this essay is to problematize the notions of modernity that circulated in the 1830s and 1840s in the Rio de la Plata region, examining symptoms and knowledge understood as anti-modern. For this, we will compare the writings of Argentine intellectuals of “generation” 1837 and their interlocutors with the reflec-tions of theorists like Antoine Compagnon and Raúl Antelo. This way, we intend to propose a different genealogy of modernity, different from what the critical tradition pointed out, restoring its heterogeneous and open character.

    O objetivo deste ensaio é problematizar as noções de modernidade que circu-lavam nas décadas de 1830 e 1840 na região do rio da Prata, examinando os sintomas e os saberes compreendidos como antimodernos. Para isso, tencio-na-se cotejar os escritos dos intelectuais argentinos da “geração” de 1837 e seus interlocutores com as reflexões de teóricos como antoine compagnon e Raúl Antelo. Desse modo, pretende-se propor outra genealogia da moderni-dade, diferente do que a tradição crí-tica apontou, restaurando seu caráter heterogêneo e aberto.
